I'm guessing this car is modded. Rule of thumb is whenever you experience detonation, retard the timing. If you car is modded you should burn a chip to control timing. If you just rebuilt your motor and lost the timing you once had and are now trying to set it from scratch back it off a bit you are too advanced. But the right way to do it is in the chip if you've modded your car.

It's been a while but I'll take a stab at it. I'd check initial and total timing first. I think total s/b about 36. To adj, counter clockwise would advance, clockwise retard. Other things: Are you getting a good spark? what c/r do you have? what octane is your gas? maybe add some octane booster or go the next jet size richer on your secondaries and see what happens. Hope this helps, if not feel free to call me a dumba$$.

when i originally got my car smogged it was pinging at high rpms, the mechanic said my timing was advanced by 7 degrees. So i'd definitely retard the timing some.
