Newbie needs help..kinda long
Hello Everyone,
I'm going to buy an 87 gta with ablown piston in it. Costs me 800$ Car is in good condition and the body is almost perfect. I was making this a project car but i dont want to spend ALOT of money on it. I'm Rebuilding the motor, i think, or should I just Put a different one in it. What kind of internals should i rebuild it with? I have headers and gutted cat and flowmasters on it but im going to get a borla catback i think but I want some power. Do you think just get forged internals and throw like a 200/250 shot on it or are there better options. I'm looking to get in teh mid 12's and still be able to drive it on the weekends or out for a ride, like a fun play car cause i have a beater for work. I'm new to this american muscle thing I have perviously owned 2 3000gt vr4 i wrecked on with a deer and teh otehr one which had around 500 hp never dyno'd so its a rough estimate got repoed With an accident 500$ a month for insurance just cant be paid plus a car payment. Anyways please help me. Also im putting in a t56 tranny and it has 410 gears which im going down to 373;s i think 410s are just to much. Help me build a car here I'm going to do it all at once so let me know what i need. I'm going to race but street racing not track. sorry bout teh length. Thanks for your help.

Its teh 350 TPI has about 30k miles on motor maybe less and tranny has about 30k on it but im going to put in a t56 anyways. Dont really like teh autos for street. But ill most likely have teh auto till i get teh cash for it, but shouldnt be to long unless i find a trade. Hope that helps.

you said you don't want to spen alot of money but you want to put a t56, borla catback, and 200-250 shot of nitrous on it? that's like $3000 right there and you haven't even rebuilt the motor. if your into that kinda money, i would buy some srp or je forged pistons, go with a scat crank and some good connecting rods. check out comp or crower cams and a good set of world castings heads.
Well, the t56 i have already sitting in my friends totaled car. The nos i have to buy if i cant get good power just outta the engine. If i can get good power with just a good rebuild or swap i dont want to use the nos. And the borla i can get for pratically nothing. its a project car so i was going to buy a already powered iroc for like 5k but i'd rather do it myself and know what i have
know what i mean. So if i psend 4k building it with stuff that would be just as good. I'm just not looking to spend 8k or 6k or that range to get it into mid 12's. Well hopefully not that much

You should of went with the already built IROC-Z.
Since your engine has pretty low mileage on it, it'd probably be a good idea to just fix it and use that 1. If you plan on staying with TPI and swap in a T-56, I don't think I'd go much higher than 3.45's. You already have a lower restriction exhaust so build the engine to work with the N2O you intend on using. The axle might need a change though since you wanna be somewhere in the 12's.

Save the money on the gears. The 4:10's definately won;t be too much. The 4:10's are great with a 6speed setup. You'll still get good gas mileage because you can keep the RPMs down and excellent acceleration when needed. The only time 4:10's are really going to hurt you is with the 700R4.

thx, but see i dont want to use teh nos unless i cant get the power i want out of a good rebuild. I was hopeing you guys could basically say here build the motor with these parts..... do this and that ect. and that shopuld put you into teh mid 12's or say rebuild the engine with these parts and get this nos kit and that should get you intot eh 12's ect. I kinda need the exact names of teh parts. Build me car car here basically. If you had about 5k to spend and had what i had what would you do to teh car to get it into the 12's. I'm glad to hear about teh gears cause that saves me some money and time. I'm doing all the labor myself with a friend so i wont have to take it to a garage or anything
thanks again guys.

If it were mine, the first thing I'd do is pull the engine and assess the damage. If the case is still serviceable, that would determine the direction of the build. Since you're shooting for 12's NA, I'd consider a forged, longer stroke, longer rod rotating assembly that makes more cubes.
I'd also be leaning very hard toward dumping the TPI in favor of an LT1 intake and the appropriate heads. If the case is still intact...
If the case was trashed when the piston went south, a larger (400) case would be a good starting point. Stroke that to 426 and you'll never have to consider the little blue bottle.

The case is still serviceable. So I'm gonna work with that. I was thinking about the LT1 myself. If I were to get that intake since it flows so well, what would be some good heads or parts that would compliment the LT1? What would I have to change to get the LT1 to go on with eaaase
