Engine Identification?
Is there a number on the engine block that will tell me what CI of engine it is? My car is a 91RS so technically its supposed to have a 305, but I swear that thing feels like it has more power then 170 HP...I can keep up with a friends car that has 210 stock with some mods so hes runnin about 230.
Anyway, I was just wondering where I could find out what block is in it. Thanks!!

Easy enough to do....
The block casting # is behind the driver's side head, kind of under the wiper motor, on top of the trans bell housing flange. Gotta be the most convenient place they could have put it, right? Get that number, and look it up at www.mortec.com

There is no way in he** that I could see that number. the top of the bell housing is back way too far in the engine compartment. I'd have to pull the engine just to get to it!!!

It might be that your buddie's car is a honda with 10ft/lbs. L03s put out like 290-300ft/lbs stock.
here is a few ways to diffirentiate (somewhat) SBCs.
The harmonic balancer- This is kinda hard to explain but a 305 has a small balancer. A 350 balancer is either gonna be larger in diameter or noticably thicker.
Heads - this doesen't really count since heads are interchangable between SBCs but is your motor has 187s on it it is prolly gonna be a 305 (I really don't see why anyone would put swirl ports on a 350).
Really the balancer is the best way aside from block casting numbers.

hey cronic, I know torque has alot to do with it....
His car is a 95 eclipse GST meaning Turbo, and it is rated stock at 210 HP (at higher RPM due to the turbo lag of course, even though it is a small spool) and he has some small mods so we are guessing that it is puttin out roughly 220 HP. I can keep up with him till about 70 MPH where my stock intake just kills my car.....it isn't gettin enough Air thanks to the poor design....
I'll look around more later to see if I can figure out where the number is
thanks!!

as rb already said the number is behind the drivers side head.. but for what your trying 2 find out it might be easier for you to look in front of the passanger side head.. there is a small lip that extends there.. might be a little grimy.. clean it off.. it will have the origional vin of the car it came from on it as well as the suffix code.. also on the back of your block next 2 the casting number in back of the intake if it is a post 87 engine it will say the cubic inches in litres for example it will say GM 5.0 or GM 5.7... pretty easy way to tell if its a 305 or 350.....if you even wanna see some pictures of where the numbers are located click here...http://www.show-n-go.net/gfiles/SBC_ID.html
