400 block HP...

How much HP will a 2 bolt (arp studs) main 406 hold? This would be possibly running a forged crank, rods, and pistons (rods and pistons are definately going to be forged)!

iv seen stock bottom end 400s take a 250+ shot

Iv also seen them fail at that point. Studed 2bolts are stonger than factory 4bolts. 500+hp with nos on top will live for 1/4 mile blasts. If your trying something like an endurance motor i suggest a motown block.

if you put in splayed 4-bolt caps, you shouldn't be worried about anything but higher rpm stuff. especially if you are using forged internals. i knew of local guys reving up their 400s to 7,000 rpms in their oval racers, and the engines held pretty well.

Have you ever checked the prices on machine work for splayed 4 bolt mains?
