easy one----EGR

Does the EGR valve still work, or recirculate exhaust gases, if you have removed the computer???

This is an attempt to eliminate my part-throttle sluggishness.

Got the idea from the new Chevy High Performance.

Thanks

Um..... depends. On an old computer controlled carbureted motor I think it's just vacuum lines and temp/vacuum switches that supply vacuum to the EGR valve under appropriate conditions. This system will continue to operate even if the ECM is removed.

On any EFI motor there will be a vacuum line that goes through an ECM-controlled vacuum control valve that controls how much vacuum is passed on to the EGR valve. This system will NOT operate if the ECM is removed, but then the engine won't run either!

The EGR valve on my 1986 LG4 is controlled by the Egr valve selenoid. I saw the article you're talking about. I had a problem with my EGR a while back, so i plugged it. Then when I got chrome valve covers that wouldn't fit with the egr valve on, I bought a $4 block off plate from the local auto store. The only problem I have it the code 53 shows up every once in a while because my selenoid went bad. The selenoid is connected to the EGR valve via a vacuum hose. I have no part throttle hesitation.
