service engine soon

My service engine soon light comes on every time I turn the key to the on position and will go out as soon as I turn the ignition... so far so good, but when I try to read the trouble codes by putting a wire from the 6 to 12 terminal on the ALDL port it just stays on and does not blink at all to give me the trouble code….
The car is running good except for a little power loss above 3500rpms (but that might be because of a problem with the cat) so I don't think the ECM or prom is messed up. What's the problem?
Thanks
Alex

Does the cooling fan turn on? I think you could be jumping the wrong terminals. The correct ones are the top two furthest to the right. You shouldnt be jumping one directly below the other, they should be side by side. If you are jumping the correct terminals, and the SES isnt flashing a code 12, the ECM cant communicate. This likely will not hinder any performance by itself, but any trouble codes that would will not be able to be retrieved. Id say recheck your connection.

Deutsche IROC,

Teh SES lamp turning on when the ignition is on without the engine running is normal.

As for retrieving the error codes, the ALDL is not labelled with numbers, but with letters. This is the pin designation:

To retrieve the error codes, the jumper needs to be installed between the 'A' and 'B' terminals. Turn on the igniton without starting the engine. Monitor the flashes on the SES lamp.
