Upgrading to 1LE brakes and I have a ??????
I have a pair of front 12" rotors and calipers off of a '94 Corvette. I know I can't use the rotors, but are the PBR dual piston calipers the same as the ones used on the 1LE 3rd gens? They look the same as these:
What numbers should I look for on the calipers?
2nd question: I have 4 wheel discs, so will I need to change the master cylinder and proportioning valve to do this swap? If I need to, what would happen if I didn't.
3rd question: Who is Guldstrand, and how do I reach them to order these adapter plates?
I have already read this tech article: http://www.isthq.com/~dan/1LEbrake.html#1LEfront
I will greatly appreciate any and all help.

ZBRA, I am pretty sure what you are looking at is Bill Fong's 1LE upgrade he performed using the Guldstrand brackets and yes the PBR calipers are supposed to be the same as what was used on certain Corvettes.
You can contact Guldstrand at www.guldstrand.com, but the brackets are not listed in their catalog although they do sell them and I have a pair, unused, that I bought last year because I was going to do the same 1LE upgrade. However, I have changed my mind. I am wanting to sell the brackets. They cost $99 plus tax and shipping so I paid about $112 and I will sell them for $75 shipped if you want them.

ok I hava a Q how can you use a caliper thats designed for a 12" rotor on something smaller without having the curve of the pad and caliper either hang off or runtheinside of the rotor? just wondering,

He's not going to use the calipers on stock rotors, he's going to use them on 12" 1LE rotors. The Corvette's 12" rotors are different than the 1LE's 12" rotors, so that's why he can't use the Corvette's. He can use the 1LE rotors, and will. He's going to use Corvette 12" calipers on 1LE 12" rotors. Clear that up?

I just recently did this swap. That article is incomplete. I will send you a pdf file with all the neccessary part #'s. Guldstrand supplies you with the bracket bolts and caliper bolts. You also need a 7/16-20 Tap, to rethread the holes on the spindle to the appropriate size- very simple procedure.

Thanks Tom and blak92. I won't be able to access my e-mail until tonight, but I'm anxious to read it.
You guys have helped a lot. Now, does anyone know if I will have to change the master cylinder and proportioning valve?

No you do not have to change the master cylinder and prop valve. The rear pbr calipers require the same line pressure as the drums. The front PBR calipers also have the same pressure as the front stock calipers. therefore, the master cylinder and prop valve is universal for all thirdgens from '89 and up only. I also checked out the part numbers from GM to see if the MC and Prop valve differed, they do not. You do not have to change teh Prop valve and MC.

Auto Specialty, also known as PowerStop. Should be available from any brake supplier, or Summit, etc.

My article is incomplete because I have not yet done the 1LE front brake conversion. The article uses pictures and information given to me by Bill Fong.
If you have a PDF or any other information that would help me complete my upgrade article, it would be very appreciated. Send it my way to dan@isthq.com. I'll add it to the tech article with due credit.

I just called Summit, and they sell Autospecialty Power Stop drilled rotors for 1LE applications for $115 each. I think I will go with these.
I needed to find a drilled rotor made by a company that also offers matching rotors for the rear of a '96 Z28 since I have a 4th gen rear end. The Power Stops are offered for the '96 for $115 each also. Total for rotors: $460.
Looks like I will have to get the rears in a few months.

My roommate has had the power stop drilled on his '96 Z28 for well over a year with no problems. My stock ones, on the other hand, are cracked all to hell and back.

The rims them selves look very nice, but it depends on what color you formula is, as to how they will look on your car. They belong on a solid colored car also, no two-tones or racing stripes. Also, you will definatelly need to get 17s. I don't think they will look as good smaller than that.

I once had an '88 RS, and I had it painted Dodge Viper Red. That was the best looking red that I have ever seen. It got a lot of attention. you don't really notice it on a Viper too much because you are looking at the car instead, but it is an awesome color. It too has an orangy tint to it, but not much at all. When it is mixed, there is no black used or any other color that would darken the red.
If you go with an 8.5 wheel in the front, use 255/45s on it. they will have the same overall diameter as the 245/50/16. That is what I have on the front of mine. On the 9.5 rears, I reccomend 285/40s.
