Humming noise from rear of car

Question for you guys, I have a 1982 Camaro with a 350 chevy, once in awhile usually when the car is really warm there is a loud humming noise that comes from the rear of the car. Is it possible it is coming from the fuel pump or rear end. Also once in awhile when I turn into a driveway there is a lil grinding noise. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Justin

More information, please. Does the noise occur when the car is moving, or even when sitting still?

Does it sound rather like something blowing its nose?

Does it do it the most after you park the car with very little gas after a long drive on a hot day, make its noise for 5 or 10 seconds, then quiet for a few minutes, then honk again for a few seconds, and so on for an hour or so?

I've never heard of anything like that.

Actually, if you look up under the car, in front of the left end of the rear end in the rear end's "tunnel", the fuel lines come down from the gas tank.... there's a plastic vent valve on one of them.... that's what's doing it.

When my car was doing it, it took me about 2 years to finally get disgusted enough with it to lie down underneath it when I knew it was likely to do it, and wait to see where it would come from.

Do you mean the tank pressure control / rollover surge valve?

...like something blowing its nose?
That's a kinder, gentler analogy than I might have used. You're certainly hitting your marks today - or as the left-turners say, "Running down in the slot."

Thanks!!!

I'm in the low groove with good forward bite!

but yes, you're exactly right Vader, it is that very valve. I think it might also be called a "relief valve" in some of the literautre.
