Starter Making Chattering Noise
Starter Making Chattering Noise
Hey Guys, today I put a starter into my car, however when I go to crank it over the starter makes a loud chattering noise and the engine doesn't turn over at all. I went under the car while by brother turned the key and the starter gear engages the flywheel but doesn't turn it at all. Also the starter gear doesn't pop back into the starter after finishing.
My battery is a weak, only 10.5V, could this cause the problem? Also yesterday I took apart my starter solenoid and cleaned all the connections before putting it back together. I tested it outside the car and it worked perfectly, so I am stumped why it doesn't work now.

Sounds like the drive in the starter is bad. It's a one-way overrunning clutch arrangement, such that the starter can turn the engine, but when the engine begins to run, it doesn't spin the starter at a million RPM or something.
You need a starter. You could in theory change just the drive (also known as a Bendix) but by the time that wears out, the rest of the starter is usually pretty worn out too.

Battery volts are 10.5..yes you have a battery problem. How old is the battery? Is it time for a new one perhaps? Grab a fresh battery out of your fathers station wagon and try it. If it works great..problem solved..you keep your dads battery and you give him the bad one
If that does not fix it..you have a solenoid problem which means new starter. The way it goes with me is if the battery I have has a 5 year warranty that sucker dies at 4.9 years...never fails...lol later.
