What is this? Pic. Broken seal?

I was changing my spark plugs today and noticed this, I am pretty sure it wasent this way a few days ago because I diddent notice it when I was putting the manifold on. Im thinking it could have torn last night when I was giving it a moderate amount of gas

But what is this? Is this whole column the steering column? As you can see in the pic the rubber peice is torn and I can see inside . Is it safe to drive like this? Or should I fix it first?

Thanks
You guys have been great for these lil questions

Nate

hey, no that's not safe to drive that looks like it can go at anytime and you wont have any steering, get another shaft from the boneyard, 2 bolts and it's out it might be difficult with the headers though

oh yeah, thats the collapsable joint, in an accident it collapses so it doesnt push it through your chest

it's discontinued, try a boneyard

now that i look at it closer, is it rubber? then it's just the seal, i thought it was the metal cracked, cheap replacement either way

if it's just a seal it will work until it gets enough crap in there to make it fail. i would try to fix it if necessary
