Tranny/Clutch problem.
Tranny/Clutch problem.
My cousin's 89 Chevy pickup makes a rattle when its setting at an idle. When he pushes the clutch in, it stops rattling. Let off again, rattle.
I've heard this called a bad carrier bearing. Where is the carrier bearing located and is this my problem?

I suspected the throwout bearing. We are going to pull the tranny this weekend and see exactly what the problem is.
Is it obvious that the bearing is bad when you see it, or can they start to rattle before they are visibly bad?
Do some people refer to the throwout bearing as a carrier bearing?
What makes one go out?
Thanks,
Nick

One big thing that kills them is keeping the clutch depressed at every stoplight, rather than shifting into neutral and letting the clutch out. It puts a lot of stress on the bearing and leads to premature failure.
