If I had it to do all over again, i'd do the exhaust first. Go all out, don't even bother with just a CAT back system. Headers, Y pipe, new cat, new mufflers, whole nine. Power chip, thermo, K&N filter, MAF (or at least modify the stock one), an airfoil... and that would about do it for all the easy stuff...

I don't know about the newer engines, but on a 305 LG4, exaust first. Everything from the headers to the tips.

Change the "peanut cam" then work on the exhaust.

Well from seeing HP charts I would FIRST PUT ON A AJUSTABLE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR. TPIS showed like a 30hp improvement at 2500rpm or something. Didn't do much for peak, but flatten out the power curves and really helped acceleration. Also it is something you can feel BIG time when driving. Then yes I would do all the free stuff. Modify the MAF, adjust the TPS for throttle response Modify stock air box or replace it with an K&N cone. Advance the Timing at your distributo a little. Next would bee a full exhaust all at once. Headers, cat, and back. Then a good ingnition system. All this time you can tune your fuel pressure to maximize you HP and Torque. And once again I say you can really tell the diffeence. Now you Thic to chip or not to chip. This is the stage where a chip will make a difference. Hypertech's Chips work best with mOds on the intake and exhaust, or hold off till you cange you cam and heads and get a Stage 4 or 5 from tpis. Also somewhere in there I would change the gear to a 3.73 or 3.42. I might even do this after the fuel pressure regulator. The gear would be on of the most noticeable things you could do to. If you can't tell I am a big supporter of the AFPR. I think it was the mod that made the most noticeable change in my car.

86 Trans Am 355 TPI Rebuilt 700R4 with Corvette servo, modified valve body, and a B&M Torque Converter (2000 rpm stall w/ lock up), 87 350 block bored .30 with new crank, bearings, rings, and magnafluxed rods. Reworked 305 heads with 3-angle valve job. Added in the rebuild was an SLP TPI cam, BBK 58mm Throttle Body,SVO 24# injectors,MSD 6A, Hypertech Power Coil, 1.5 Crane roller tipped rocker arms, SLP Intake Runners and Port matching in upper intake including fully ported plenum, TPIS adjustable fuel pressure regulator @ 46psi, Hooker shorty style headers w/ Thermotech heat wrapping, Custom 3” exhaust with Flowmaster muffler and chrome quad tips, Hypertech Thermomaster Computer chip, K&N open element cone filter on modified MAF per TPIS specs, MSD Wires, removal of A/C hardware and a 1LE firewall cover installed. Also there has been a PST front suspension kit with Hotchkis strut tower brace

First of all before you do any mods you need to decide what you want to do with your car (long term). seeing 12's in a 305 is bassicly impossible N/A unless you plan to make it an all out drag car not a street car. With a N/A 350 thats built to a 406 11's is possible with the right heads and cam (matched parts). Do you want a bracket racer capable of beating the LS1's in the new corvettes, camaros and birds? if so drop a built 350 into your ride. Or do you like being the underdog in a 305 that imbarrases those stuck up 350 owners (joke of course)

Lets say you are planning on getting a 350 in the future. All the mods you do now should be compatable with the 350 you get in the future. full exhaust, better breathing intake components, gears, suspension for handling and better launcing, and to top it off a supercharger or nitrous kit

But if you like the 305 and plan to keep it go ahead and build the engine. But keep in mind building a 350 will get you much better results. if building the best damn 305 is your objective i would get some s/r torquer heads, LT4 cam, and a stronger rotating assembly. Those mods along with the other mods i mentioned in the paragraph above this one. A stronger bottom end is essential so you can run alot of boost from the supercharger or the spray from the NOS.

Preston Smith is now running 9's in the quarter mile with his 305TPI IROC. he is using corvette heads for low compression along with a vortec supercharger 24 PSI i believe. That is one hell of a SC most sc out there arent over 10 PSI. This car is also his daily driver. 305's can be made to run but its all about the benjamins good luck

I definitely agree with Full exhaust, and not the 2 1/2" cat and collecter either, a FULL 3" exhaust Headers, 3"cat and catback. Then Ultimate TBI mods and either Open Air Element or dual snorkel with spacer removed. With 3.42 gears this combo should make for mid to low 15's at 90mph in an RS.

I have a 1988 formula TPI 305 5 speed with 3.45 gears. These are the mods that I did and the times that it ran.

1. 15.20's all stock @ 90 MPH
2. Gutted mass air flow sensor 15.10's @ 90 MPH
3. Comp Cams 1.52 roller tipped rockers 15.00's @ 90-91 MPH
4. SLP cold air kit 14.88 @ 90-91
5. MAC headers and cat back 14.30's @ 96 MPH
6. TPIS AFPR and air foil 14.20's @ 96-97 MPH
7. MAC under drive pulleys 14.00's @ 97-99 MPH
8. ADS super chip 13.99 @ 99 MPH

ALL these times were acheived with street tires.

Buy the exhaust first, it makes a big difference.

305-Jive, How do you build a 406 from a 350?
I thought 406 was a 400 with .030" overbore.
