how do i adjust timing

i know this is a stupid question but hwo do i adjust my timing? i know there is a plug to pull but i am unsure of which on. what is the opptimum setting i hear 12 to 16 please let me know 350 tpi 5.7 thanks

New to working on carz? you seem to be posting alot of these type of posts. Anywayz there is a wire you disconect. It should be in the corner in the passenger side. It's brown. THen you loosed the hold down bolt and then turn the dist. I'm guessing you know how to use a timing light.

Yes, the wire is brown and has a black connector in the middle. It's taking out the advance so you get a base timing. On a carb you take off the vaccuum line(in think) to the distributer so it doesn't advance when you set the base timing. Base timing is the timing where your engine starts the spark curve at and advances from that point as the rpms go up. So if you don't disconnect the wire you may be reading a slightly advanced timing number. So make sure to disconnect it. Only go a few degrees at a time and drive it, when you notice the power seeming to go down, or hearing a pinging sound under the hood. Then you put the timing back 1-2 degrees and your set.
