Ticking noise coming out of the engine

There is a small knocking noise which seems to be coming from the area where the valve cover is on the right side, but don't know for sure. After the engine warms up though, like 10 mins. of driving, the noise stops. I have switched to mobile synthetic about 2,000 miles ago - was i wrong to do that?

p.s. I didn't notice any power loss

Mods:Hooker Aerochamber 3" exhaust, gutted kitty,
March 2 piece underdrive pullies, smog pump gone,;these two made a very noticable difference.
14x4 K&N open air element filter
Eibach springs with KYB's are already installed up front. Gonna work on the rear soon.
Appearance: Harwood cowl hood, Z-28 wing, painted black-original color was light blue)

Stock Options:117,000 miles on motor, 5spd, TBI, 305, T-tops
Going to the track this summer, but i'm pretty sure i'm still in the 16's on the 1/4 mile (or maybe not any more)

Sears has a $12 mechanic's stethoscope that will make finding the source of the sound very easy. I had a slight "rattle" noise on startup and at high revs, re-lashed the rockers and replaced the distributor but couldn't find it. With the stethoscope, I found a loose bellhousing bolt that was allowing the tranny dipstick to rattle around.

You hear neat stuff listening to the engine while running, probe the oilpan and hear the pump whirring, etc.

Take a piece of broom handle and while engine is still cold, put handle against engine block in different locations, cup your hand and put against your ear. This will tell you if it's a rod knock or not. It should work on valve cover also.

Poor man's stethoscope: 3' of heater hose and a funnel. Or even, no funnel.

Like the other post said, you'd be amazed at the little sounds that come from each part of an engine. It's easier to hear stuff if you disconnect the belts. Of course you can't run it for a long time that way.

My oil pressure gauge don't work, it hasn't worked ever since i bought the car. I'm gonna try the poor man's stethoscope and let you guys know what i hear. I don't want to have to pull the valve covers cause than i would need new seals, but i might have to.
