engine de-greaser safe?

i found a can of engine degreaser/cleaner in my garage, the kind that you spray on the engine and then rinse it off with water...on the can it says to tape off all electrical parts that water may touch...it seems a little dangerous to me, has anyone ever tried this? i just want to know if its safe to use, i definitely dont want to ruin my engine with a 3 dollar bottle of engine degreaser...what do u think?

Smell it... if it smells like diesel fuel, then it's safe, and highly effective on oil and grease especially.

Pull your battery first. Then you should be safe. Just let it dry when you are done.

thanks you guys were right it worked just fine...i pulled the battery first and taped off all the wires that were exposed...before i used the spray i used a vacuum cleaner to suck all the dirt and pine needles out of the engine bay, the old lady who owned the car before me obviously didnt use it much(her husband bought it for her as an anniversary gift)...on one of the valve covers there was insulation that must have been collected by a small rodent, i couldnt believe it, also there were a few spots with tons of leaves and dirt caked on...so i cleaned all that up and went ahead with the de-greaser, i covered the carb and the distributor with plastic bags and taped off the battery terminals just to be safe...it looks a lot better than before....
