NJ Emissions
NJ Emissions
I was wondering if icould remove all the EGR and AIR equipment and still pass emissions. Having this carp on there really limits what you can use as far as induction and exhsaust goes.
I seriously doubt it. I'm in Jersey too and it's hard enough with an older model car. I just installed new headers and ripped out all my emissions tubes and also hollowed out my cat and what do I see the very next day? I look in the paper and it says that emissions testing is going to be even harder to pass. I just about cried. Its hard enough to find someone who can be nice when giving you the emissions test, not unless you wanna throw him a quick 50 bucks to help you out. (disclaimer - I do not condone falsifying state inspections record for cars. Just in case anyone important is reading this, hehe.)

I don't know why people think this. Where did this idea get started anyway?
You've got a box-stock LG4, no mods. Your first mod needs to be exhaust. Let's see.... Edelbrock, SLP, Flowtech, and Dynomax come right to the top of my head as makers of exhaust systems for these cars. Every one of them has systems that are entirely 50-state street legal. In fact, some of them don't even offer ones that aren't, at all!!! Every single system they sell supports all that "crap", so that you can continue to drive your car with the permission of your locality.
Your next mod needs to be the cam. Again, every single cam mfr offers cams that are certified 50-state legal, and even more that are 49-state (NJ included) legal. There are lots and lots of choices there.
Your next mod after that would be to port your heads. That's not illegal in any state either.
After that, since now you've got the motor uncorked, you need to gear it so that it can occasionally run at the RPMs where it now makes all this new-found power that comes from the added flow. Gears are legal in every state.
None of this requires removing any of that "crap". All of it, if done properly, will cause you no trouble at all at the sniffer test, you won't have to worry about it any more than you would if it was bone stock. You'll be able to just drive up and cruise right through like a brand-new car would.
Right now, my car has its original 305 block, with some other heads, a Comp XR264HR cam, and Edelbrock headers; it still has the stock air cleaner, the stock carb, the stock cooling system (except for a Stewart water pump), the stock exhaust except for a Dynomax muffler and a replacement cat, the stock gears (3.73 in my case), and every single emissions control device including AIR and EGR installed and operating..... and before I moved here a year ago, it was licensed in California. It does about 210 HP and 280 ft-lbs on the chassis dyno, which is a good bit more power than alot of the modded L98s on this board. All this, while easily passing CA emissions inspection (one hell of alot more thorough than NJ, I can assure you).
You don't need to start ripping stuff off of your car to make it run good. I fail to understand what the problem is here.

Mine passed NJ emission test easily, in the same trim that got me a 13.19sec@102mph at the dragstrip. That's with AIR, aftermarket cat, everything but EGR.
The emission stuff has negligible effect on performance in the case of at least '86 and up cars. They finally engineered better hardware, instead of stuff like that stupid butterfly inside the exhaust manifold thingy they used in the '70s. Just select the right cam, headers, and whatnot.
Also...the new ZO6 makes 400+ hp with all that "crap".

um i am also in NJ and lemme tell you...its not easy to pass especially without your EGR setup and stuff. They are VERY VERY strict i mean they failed me for being 2 numbers under the standard i was fuming!
