strange oil burning

just got done with my 305-350 swap. motor runs great but recently it started to burn oil. and not like a little puff now and then but i mean it floods the parking lot when i get on the gas. heres the tricky part.....

1. never burned oil untill now, motor burned clean on initial startup, now 200miles later its belching smoke

2. doesnt burn when idleing, or on startup (bad valve seals would be worst at startup, this tells me seals arent it)

3. checked compression, 150-160 on all cyl (not rings)

4. adjusted valves properly, not a valve lash/collapsed lifter problem.

5. burning gets worse as engine warms up

6. burns most when engine is revved, then backed off all the sudden. (vaccum problem?)

7. checked vaccum at idle, vaccum is great.

my theory is that its sucking oil from my leaky valve cover gaskets into the intake manifold, since it seems to burn the worst when vaccum is the highest. any suggestions? please help i do not want to pull my engine out again. thanks

Could it be your PCV valve is bad ? If you even have one...

It could also mean you have a bad seal between the intake manifold and head surfaces.

i dont have pcv, just breathers. is that really going to cause all that smoke?

tonight i fired it up and drove it for about an hour, smoked a little when i got on it but none elsewise. why is it suddenly better? then when i got out to look at the tail pipes it was fine, then all the sudden the idle jumped up 500rpm and it started smoking again.

to tell you the truth im not sure.. but why would you eliminate your pcv system? it may be causing poor ring seal due to lack of crankcase vaccum

You can use a breather on one side, but the other needs to be connected to the intake manifold using a pcv valve.

How much is it burning? New motors burn oil. If you drove a 200 mile trip you probably wouldn't notice it, but you would when you're idling in the parking lot the next day. Better keep an eye on your oil.

well it burns quite a bit. its enough to make people in parking lots eyes water. but the strange thing is, its intermittent. when the motor is idleing just fine at 700rpm, it doesnt burn any oil. but when the motor is idleing at 1500rpm, it floods the driveway. its like there is something that is affecting my idle that also affects my oil. makes no sense? i know all new motors burn oil but this is insane, im 1qt low right now and i changed the oil and filled it up 2 days ago.

ill try pcv, youre right, maybe its keeping the rings from seating.
thanks guys
