Check Engine Light
Check Engine Light
Check Engine Light started 2 come on like the last week, only for like 1 minute tho and then it turn soff again, its weird its outa no where and everything runs fine, just turns on for like 1 min sometimes and then off again right away. Any ideas? Only thing I can think of is when i sprayed some of the linkage and springs on my Throttle Body with WD-40 because the throttle was sticking, shouldnt do anything but it only started comeing on after that.

do you know how to flash codes at your ADL..if so check to see what code it is throwing.

DA,
"Check Engine," "Service Engine," MIL - all the same thing. Checking the ECM for error codes can be a real chore, requiring specialized equipment. You'll need a GM DTCR - Diagnostic Trouble Code Request tool (also known as a paper clip or jumper wire), an ODWR - Organic Data and Word Recording device (or a note pad and pencil), and of course the most specialized tool - the key that fits your ignition. The whole process could also be very time-consuming, taking up to five minutes of your valuable time - possibly more if you cannot find your keys.
With the engine and ignition turned off, locate the ALDL connector under the dash, just to the right of the steering wheel in the driver's foot well area on Firebirds, and on the left on Camaros. There should be a small rectangular cover over the access hole in the lower dash trim.

Insert a tool as described above (paper clip) into the 'A' and 'B' terminals on the ALDL connector:

WITHOUT STARTING the engine, turn the ignition to the "RUN" position. Watch the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) - it will begin to flash. This is also commonly called the "Service Engine Soon" or "SES" lamp. The first code will flash three times, and will usually be a code '12'. This is encoded by one flash of the lamp, a brief pause, then two successive flashes of the lamp. Each code will repeat three times, so you should see a "Code 12" flash three times. Any other error codes will follow in numerical order, and each code should flash three times. After all codes have been displayed three times, the "Code 12" will again flash three times, then all other codes will follow as described earlier. This cycle will continue until the jumper is removed or the ignition is turned off.
After you have made a note of all error codes, turn off the ignition and remove the jumper immediately. If you forget to remove the jumper and attempt to start the engine with it in place, you could damage the ECM. For this reason you should remove it immediately.
Once you have a note of all error codes, check this file for the decoding:
GM Error Codes.pdf.
You'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open/print the file.

Not so weird..your computer is telling you there is a problem somewhere..You really should take the time to check it out...takes about as much time tod as it did for you to log on to Thirdgen.org and post this reply!
..And about the same time it took Vader to explain to you ...with Pics...how to do it!

Well after buying my extremeley expensive GM Diagnostic Trouble Code Request Rool aka paper click (lol still funny 2 me) I put it in check engine light flashed 1s then 2 more times faster than the 1st, and it showed no codes. Just kept repeating that. Cant say im disappointed since it shows nothing wrong but cant say Im happy either because why was the check engine light coming on every once in a blue moon then? Thx anywayz guys vader may the f-body be with u.
DA,
The ECM will retain error information for the last 40-50 engine run cycles. If you waited too long to retrieve the error code, it may have been "pushed out" the end of the register.
You could keep your Diagnostic Trouble Code Request Tool with you to check it a little sooner the next time you light haunts you, but I'd hate to leave a piece of fine diagnostic equipment floating around the car where someone might steal it.

Nope buddy, I told myself not to drive it while there was a problem with it so the last time I drove the car it did have the light come on. So it was the next cycle. Oh wellz Ill try it next time it goes off I guess. And ya I better leave my equiptment at home, theives nowadays.
