Air cleaner question....need opinions !

My '83 Firebird, is a 305 4 bbl, recently I changed the air cleaner to one of those chrome aftermarket types. The problem I have now is, the engine tends to bog out or hesitate when I give it gas pulling out. It did not do that before the change. My question is: are there any adjustments I can make to the carb to prevent this from happening ? I hate to go back to the stock aircleaner. Thanks for any responses !

After I 1st got my '84, I flipped the air cleaner lid over (exposes the element a bit..old trick), and found that the engine would bog or 'nose over' at speed. Although I didn't check, I assumed that the now inverted air cleaner lid was interfering w/ the opening of the secondary air valve and causing this. Have you checked ALL your clearances?

I do have plenty of clearence, I thought maybe there was too much air coming in the carb. Thought maybe there was a way to compensate for that......
