Emissions for '82 engine swap
Emissions for '82 engine swap
I want to replace my 305 that threw a rod in my '82 Z28 with a 350. If I was building a 305 I would just put the smog equipment back on. Will the emissions equipment I have work with the 350? Is there a newer emissions setup with the 350 I could use? There seems to be a lack of info on emissions. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
By and large, the emissions hardware will switch over to a 350. However, the induction you have will influence the rest of my answer. If you have the cross-fire, lose it. It plain just doesn't work from a performance point of view. On the other hand, if it is Carb'd, you can definitely work with it.
GM sells a 305 to 350 kit that uses the stock q-jet with different rods for the secondaries. They add the dual snorkle air cleaner from the L69 and the larger TPI exhaust manifolds with dual cat convertors. BTW, the later model year dual monolith cats, as are aftermarket cats, much better than the early pellet-style.
Their kit is quite pricey, but you can do they same thing on your own and save some bucks. Also, since there a couple of emissions-legal headers out there I would skip the manifolds and go straight to headers.
Lastly, your state's DMV/Highway Patrol will have the info on emissions you're looking for.

Thank you . Thank you. Thank you.
It's been like looking for a needle in a haystack for emissions answers. I thought I would go with an Edelbrock performance package that is supposed to be street legal and use the emissions equipment off the 305.

Lizard hit most of the high points pretty well. I would add, I have a 400 in my 83, with a Comp XR282HR, 186 heads, Holley 800 carb, TES, DUI distributor; it still has the AIR but without the air mgmt valve so it's full-time, and it has a Dynomax 3" cat. In my locale cars are annually inspected and must meet the idle emissions specs for their year model. My car meets the 83 specs easily.
You don't say which engine you've got, but neither of the available ones has a very good induction system. You need to get a set of headers, a better cat (if your locale requires it), and a good cat-back. Get all that for a 350 TPI car; it will fit right on yours as a whole unit, which you can't do a piece at a time. If you keep the Q-Jet, get the kit mentioned for it above.
