Its purpose is to flush combustion leakage and moisture out of the crankcase, and replace it with fresh filtered air. It helps your oil last longer and keeps sludge and varnish formation inside the motor to a minimum.

It uses a "calibrated vacuum leak" (the PCV valve) to allow the engine to draw crankcase air out through one valve cover. Fresh air is supplied into the other valve cover.

A properly working factory system will not cause oil burning. Aftermarket valve cover, on the other hand, can fail to separate the oil mist from the air, and may allow some oil into the intake.

Depending on what year of L98 was swapped into your 86 car, it may use the MAF system; in which case the clean air comes from a point after the MAF and before the throttle body, so that before it goes into the crankcase and then out through the PCV valve into the intake, it has passed through the MAF, and been counted.
