Installing a junkyard posi

There was an article in a magazine a few days ago where they used the posi out of a second-gen car and put it into a 4th gen without anything but a few basic tools. I always assumed that putting a posi in would be just as hard as doing a gear swap, but after reading this article they made it seem really easy. Has anyone done this, or know how to do so? They picked up their posi for $25 from a junkyard, do you guys think this is feasible?
Thanks,
Brandon

I doubt that would work... 2nd gens came with 8.5" rears, 4th gens come with 7.6"...

Now, you could use a 3rd gen posi carrier in your 4th gen, those are the same size and will interchange. However, the 4th gens come with a better posi than the ones in 3rd gens, so the smart thing to do would actually be to get a 4th gen posi carrier to put in your 4th gen rear.

You're pretty much on target about the installation though, it can be done with hand tools but it's easier (particularly unbolting the ring gear) with air. The thing that varies from one rear end to another is the housing; you can practically always take another carrier, and put it into a housing using the shims that were selected for that housing.

Well, I have a 3rd gen rear, but the magazine used one from a 4th gen. I wish I could remember the name of the magazine because they specifically said you can use the posi out of a 2nd gen...oh well. On a side note, does anyone know what a 4th gen posi would run me from a junkyard?

I have found one in Little Rock for $350, less if I pull it myself. That is buying it outright. I don't know what he would give for my non-posi.
