need starter help here !!!!

here is what I have, can someone tell me what to ask for at the auto parts store.

original configuration:

85 TA--305 LG4-- 5 speed tranny---153 tooth flywheel----straight pattern starter for 153 tooth flywheel

new configuration:

85 TA---305 LG4(same as above)---TH-350 tranny---168 tooth flexplate.

I need a starter with the straight bolt pattern that fits the 168 tooth flexplate. what vehicles came with this combination, I went to pep-boys and couldn't find anything that would match, everything that fits the 168 tooth flexplate has the stagered bolts. I would like to stick with the parts stores for the starter and avoid summit or jegs type places. I would also like to avoid switching the flexplates if possible. bear in mind that they can only look up parts based on vehicle, they can't search for flexplate/starter combinations.

You need starter part # 3510-S

It (;ike virtually all other 168-tooth starters) is the staggered pattern.

Why can't you use that?

my block is set up for a standard bolt pattern ( the two bolts that hold the starter on are in the same plane with each other, the 168's I looked at have bolt holes that are offset from each other. to my knowledge my block only has hole for the straight in line bolts. unless I'm mistaken

Look closer before you try to find a starter built out of nonobtanium

nonobtainium HUH, so, do you think my block will accept the stagered bolts or not. I know it's a true '85 block two bolt rear main seal motor.

I'd sure give it a look before I'd start stressing out...

reguardless of what you think you saw, or have, i'll have to agree with rb you should have a stagered bolt pattern, at most someone may of had the block drilled for the exrea hole to make it stright, but i doubt it.

OK,OK,OK-----I'll never doubt you guy's word again, I crawled under the car today and low and behold. I have holes for both patterns, then I got smart and looked at the two other blocks I have in the garage and what did my eyes behold, both have three holes also. I guess that they all came set up for either standard or straight.

thanks again guys.

Why not just buy a starter houseing (1984097) for a 168T (14") flexplate. A lot cheaper. I hope your starter dosn't come in contace with your exhaust now.
