What will casue the fuseable link from the starter to burn?

I get in the car the other day figuring Hey O have not had the car out in a while Lwet me take it to work, Well what do you know I started it up and there is noting but smoke, ( the car did not start) So I get pissed and call a tow truck whick comes and gets it while I am at work, To make a long story short they scracthed the **** out of it loading it ( but they fixed the paint). But my ? what would cause this? The car has never let me down before ( I have owned it for 7 years).

The fuseable link is just that, a Fuse, depending on which one let go, would determine the cause. The link would fail due to a larger draw than should have been there. Start with the circuit which blew and check the wiring back to each item.

I have had my fusible link let go twice. Once in 1991 (when the car was seven years old), and once in 1998, when the car was fourteen years old. they are subject to engine heat, salt-water splash in the winter, and regular moisture in the summer.

I guess you can expect it to happen sometimes.

Mine blew 3 of them in a month. The plug that goes into the alternator (real technical I know) the clips had become worn and were loose and this was somehow causing voltage spikes and my voltmeter would go to ov 16 V,lights would get real bright. I had to replace the connector and it has been fine since.
