MAF code 34?
MAF code 34?
my cousin just got an 85 trans am tpi auto. I cant get this thing to run right at all, and it throws me code 12, 24, and 34. Can anyone tell me exactly what these codes mean, i looked em up but what can i maybe do to fix my problem? i mean i even unhook the maf and it makes no difference in how it runs at all... it starts and runs like crap with the maf in and with it out. any help would help, thanks a lot

350Z,
If the MAF has failed, the engine won't run any differently with it connected or disconnected. You can check the output of a digital MAF with a frequency counter or oscilloscope. A regular handheld meter won't do for checking the signal, but can help in confirming the wiring to the MAF. Since the MAF is a rather expensive component, it would be worthwhile to troubleshoot a little before replacing it.
As for the definitions of error codes, you can download and open this file:
GM Error Codes.pdf
You'll need
to open/view/print the file.

350Z,
What is the part number on the MAF (the GM and Bosch numbers)?
And, what was the manufacture date of the vehicle? The month/year should be on the label on the rear of the driver's door. Most '85 TPIs used a Delco digital (FM) MAF sensor. Rumor is that some very late TPIs may have used the Bosch analog MAF. You '89 certainly uses the analog MAF, so it if works correctly on your '89, teh '85 may have the wrong MAF, or you may have one of those rumored very late '85s. Otherwise, they shouldn't interchange.

Vader,
I follow your posts regularly and you are extremely knowledgeable, helpful and always on the money. However, when you stated If the MAF has failed, the engine won't run any differently with it connected or disconnected. I would have to dissagree with that statement. Only because I had a problem with an 85 that was driving me nuts and I finally disconnected the MAF and the car ran almost great. When it was connected it would not do anything but barely idle and the second you gave it gas it would stumble and sputter. Once this particular one was replaced the problem was solved.

Is there a way to test the MAF to see if it is the problem other than just replacing it?
