A line lock basically is a switch that you push that provides brake pressure to either the front or rear brakes (usually front) thereby holding your car in place to do a burnout.

ok, it's starting to make sense now... does anyone have any writeups on installing one? Just curious whether it would be worth the time/effort

Racers use a line lock (roll control) for a couple of reasons. First of all it's usually always plumbed into the front brakes AFTER the proportioning valve. It's just a solinoid. When you step on the brakes then push the line lock button and release the brakes, the front brakes are held on until the button is released.

It's used for waterbox burnouts so the front brakes hold the car and the rear brakes aren't dragging during the burnout.

Manual transmission cars will also use it on the starting line so they don't accidently roll through the staging lights.
