Alright im like everyone else here i wants tons of power with little money. I know that i'm gonna have to spend money and i plan on saving up about 4k before doing this, so here's what i want to know. I have a 406, in good shape, The 350 in the car, or maybe a crate engine. I loved the 406 in my el camino and it would be great to get it back, but im not that good with all the computer stuff, how hard would it be to get the computer all "happy" with the bigger cubes(would i need new injectors??), or was thinking of destroking the 406 down to like a 377 or whatever a 377 bored .03 over is. That would make a good revving engne correct?
Then there's the possibility of just building a nice 355 out of whats in there. Then to keep the TPI or carb it...? any help any suggestions i'm so ton in so many directions. No rush if you have time i'll be chekcing often i'll probly print this out when im done to refer to when i get the $$

well have u thaught about storking the 350 to a 383 wont cost over 700 dollars unlees u have the hook up then its like 400 dollars.what car is this for?a f-body with a 406 will run nice but its heavy a 383 will be your best choice but thats my opion.to use a computer on the 406 just need 454 injectors and a chip and you will be good but what hp do u want and what 1/4 times u wanna run?

in reality, TPI is not going ot cut it on a 406, it just doesn't flow enough. to stick with TPI and the big cubes you need to change the intake, to something like the holley stealth ram.

to make to computer happy depends on the computer you will need bigger injectors. if you are MAF you may not need all that much computer work, but if you are speed desity, it will take quite a bit of of work on the computer to make it perform to it potential.

if you don't have emisions, the carb is going to be easier, and cheaper than trying to stick with FI, but both are very doable options, if you want to go FI, start reading up on the TPI board about alternatives to the factory TPI setup, and also start reading the DIY-PROM broard for info on the computer tuning.

Thanks for the replies, i started reasin on the prom stuff, and think i might be able to handle it. Where would i find 454 injectors? through gm? I was thinking about going with vortec heads and SD base for it with some large tube runners and a ported plenum, to keep emmisions happy b/c it seems that the only setup that keeps the egr. and i saw it as a kit at the SD website. I would like an engine that revs a little more than a 383 but if it's a good engine i could try it. It's going in an '89 with the MAF system, no 1/4 mile times in mind but a low 13 second maybe even high 12 second car would satisfy me greatly

Thanks Josh

454 injectors do not apply to you , that is for TBI, you would some larger TPI injectors, like 26lbs SVO injectors. i am not a huge TPI guy, so the actualy size you need may be diffrent, but i used that as an example.

alright then i'll flip through some old threads tonight maybe this has been answered as far as injector size. what do you think a 383 with vortec heads and all the other above mentioned things would run considering i got traction? What is a better street motor, i de-stroked 400 or the stroked 350? would the 700r4 slightly built take the abuse?

alright i did my research and found that most guys with big small blocks seem to be running 24# injectors to satisfy their engines.
How is the stock crank in a 400? should i reuse it or order a forged one? i was thinking of ordering a stroker kit for the 350, are these kits strong enough to handle abuse, they just seem kinda cheap(in price), not that im complaining but it just makes me nervous.

alright well i figured i'd keep talking and maybe someone will bite, heh. anyways here's one of the kits i was looking at, at jegs
Stroker kit

i was looking at the flat top one for about a grand. i know that the crank is cast not forged is this a huge deal? how many rpms can this rotating assembly turn? appprozimate horsepower limts?

Thanks guys
