HELP! 4th gen with major misfire

I got a good deal on a '93 Z28 a few months ago and I bought it for my girlfriend. It is almost undrivable now. Here is the deal: on light throtle, it kind of bucks and clunks back and forth. If you mash the gas usually it picks up and goes. Some times though it makes a loud "pop" out the front. (intake backfire?) It's been doing this for a while now, and it has gotten worse and worse. I was thinking it is most likely the LT1 Opti-spark. What do you think? I know these things are expensive, is there anything else I can try first? Could it just need new plugs & wires? I know a tune up on an LT1 is impossible without a lift. What should I do?

All of my LT1 Friends have had problems with the Optispark. I'll bet thats what it is. At least is sounds like thats what it is.
