Another Fuel pump thread

Ok, did some searching, and i just wanted another opinion: Went to start car ('89 Iroc, 5.7ltr). Car just turns over and over and over. Try some starter fluid. Car attempts to turn over, but loses it. Hmm... press fuel pressure test valve, expect fuel, get some and mostly air bubbles. Go back inside car, turn ignition to on, listen for fuel pump. Nothing. Go back to valve, no fuel. Get good length of wire; run wire from 12volt + to G terminal. I hear the fuel pump relay click, but no fuel pump. AT this point, i'm pretty much thinking that my pump is dead.

So, wonderful readers, agree or not?

And if so, what is a good replacement? I saw a couple of post about Walboro pumps, what one would i be looking for? I pretty much want something that if i change it, i won't have to do it again in like... the rest of my life ..... or close to it.

Thanks for any help.

The best way to diagnose this is to drop the $40 for a fuel pressure gauge. Make sure to buy one for fuel injected engines; the gauge goes up to 80 PSI. (Cheaper $12 carb gauges won't work.)

If you want to trace ALL of the wiring for your fuel pump, run through this chart: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=150163 The wiring should be darn near identical for your v8 tpi.

I'd hate to see you drop the tank just because there was a break in the wire between the fuel pump and the front of the car... be careful with the starter fluid, too. I've heard of people blowing up the top of their FI motors by using that stuff. (It can puddle in the intake; and one backfire can ignite the puddle.)

You could get under the rear of the car, unplug the harness near the tank and hook up a positive & neg to the appropriate connectors going to the tank (with either wires going to battery or a battery jumper box) and listen if the fuel pump is working, If so, try to start the car and diagnose it from that point. I did this a couple weeks ago on one of my cars and it is pretty easy.
Good luck!

Forgot to add this last night... I don't know why I went on the computer that late, anyway!!

You remember the fuel pump "hummmm", right? Well, when my first pump died, it sounded sick- like a dying gurgle- and it was very quiet... I could barely hear it. When my second pump died, it was the complete opposite! It didn't hum. It BUZZZZZZED!!! That sucker was loud! It sounded like I had an angry hornets nest inside the fuel tank.

Of course, the second pump died at the racetrack. My car likes to do that. Good think it was late at night or I never would've made it home! (The engine "ran" at 3000 RPM. Had to drive home in 2nd gear, and slip the trans into neutral at every stop light, just coasting until the light turned green.)

Just a suggestion...

...I had a similar problem only to find out the pump was fine but, the rubber hose connecting the pump to the fuel rail was ruined, gooey to say the least...I replaced that and have been just fine ever since.

Just check for voltage at the pump connector next to the tank.
If you get voltage, pump is dead, if no voltage, check wiring up front.

Just an update: It was the pump. Dead. got it switched out, and the car runs great now.

Thanks,
