starter motor problems
starter motor problems
I have just replaced my starter motor ( 305 ci). Turns over fine but then as if the battery is half flat, The battery is brand new. I have shimmed the starter so the 1/8 dowel fits snugly between the amature shaft & the flywheel ( one half shim on the outer bolt). Maybe I need to remove the shim but risk having a to bigger gap. The only other thing is that maybe my timing is way out causing this bad starting, the block has a chrome timing chain cover fitted with no timing tab, so I have fitted the 'mr gasget' version which is lower down on the side of the cover, so will this cause timing problems? Its set to 8 degrees BTDC going buy the 'Mr Gasget ' tab
Any thoughts guys..much appreciated
thanks Damian

hmmm, starting problems can be tricky.
The timing tab shouldn't make a differance, as it will be a different shape, in order to compensate for the different position. TDC is TDC, thats all there is to that!
what are the dash lights doing? are they staying bright, or are they dimming right down when the starter cranks?
i'd look at your earth points, check the cleanliness of the battery terminals, and re check the connections on the starter.
also try cranking over with the dizzy cap off, (make sure its well out of harms way, and wont fall down onto the rotor arm)
if it is a timing issue, with no spark to try and prematurely ignite the mixture, it would crank normaly, if it is still slow the problem must be electrical.
what weight oil do you have? an engine will crank slightly slower with thicker oil. is it a manual (i seem to recall from speaking to you last week, that it is) press the clutch as you crank, it reduces the load on the starter, as you are not turning the gearbox as well.
Good luck with this, let us know the outcome.
