Does the A/C condensor have to Come out to?

Haven't done one on a thrid gen, but on my 2nd gen I was able to swing the condensor, and compressor togather off to the side without disconnecting them. It gave me that all important room to get that cam out...
Cheat solution to that overly priced R-12.
