700r4 to tubo 350 swap

Going to do this swap on a friends car.Its a 85.What all is involve ?Is it a direct bolt in(minus shifter and cooler lines). What i'm most concerned about is the bar that goes from the rear to the trans.Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance

That bar is called the torque arm. B&M as well as hurst has kits to mount the needed bracket on a TH-350 or TH-400. I know the B&M kit also takes care of the cross member mount location difference. A few people have made cross members and torque arms that work together to take the stress off the transmission. While nobody seems to have trouble with the stress on the transmission its not a bad idea. If the TH-350 has a 9" tail shaft you will be able to use the same drive shaft. Otherwise you may have to get a new drive shaft or have the old one lengthend. You probably already know that you need a different torque converter and dip stick for the TH-350. You will also need a different detent cable for the TH-350. Overall once you have the torque arm mount for the TH-350 its not a hard swap.

Why bother though? the 700r4 is a pretty good trans stock as long as you don't go crazy with the power, and the turbo 350 will really screw your gas milage

Check out SPOHN Performance. They make an excellent torque arm/ crossmember unit. Bit pricey, but worth the investment if building big power.

I did the same swop. One word of advice if you use the B&M kit make sure to get longer bolts for the tail shaft mount. I didn't and lost 2 bolts and it made alot of noice. The treads were not engaged enough and pulled out of the transmission. The bracked is thick and therefore you will get less thread engagement. Go for the swap if you dont like OD. The R4's are just way to wimpy!
