engine code breakdown
engine code breakdown
I just got a good look at my engine and the numbers 627 are cast on both sides. Anyone care to tell me that that code breaks down to? I've been wondering what's under my hood for sometime since the previous owner claimed it's a newer/rebuild 305. But I never trusted the crooked SOB.

GB,
Are you certain it isn't "327"?

Maybe, I could have swore it was a 6 though...Me being upside down swapping my plugs didn't help any reading it. So what exactly does that mean? It doesn't mean there could be a 327 under the hood right?

Get Blown?, you are originally right, it is 627, as in 14093627. That is a 305 block for 1988-94 models years. Typically in all SBC have the last three numbers of the block casting number (or P/N) are stamped on either side of the block for easy reference. From my knowledge, GM (or should I say Chevy) never put the CID on the block (or sides), this is because the CID is based on the crank which was not specific to a block. Example: A 657 block was equipt with a 3.00", 3.25" and 3.48" crankshafts for 302, 327, and 350 CID engines (respectfully).
