Startup Smoke
Startup Smoke
My '90 IROC, 5.7, smokes at startup and is getting worse daily. There is a good amount of oil at the head/intake manifold interface on the passenger side, and some on the other side. Question is: can a bad intake gasket cause startup smoke? I don't think it is the valve oil seals because of the rapidly worsening conditions, and the fact the car has only 34K miles. Thanks.

I still wouldn't rule out the valve seals. Those are notorious for going out like that. 34K miles or not, could be age in conjunction. Intake gasket? I don't think so ... oil doesn't pass through the intake. That leak is most likely your valve cover gasket. Also Check your PCV Valve and breather ... one or both can be restricted. I'm still willing to bet on valve seals. **** poor design on GM's part.

I have a 91 RS, mine does the same thing. I asked my mechanic buddy what the hell it was and he said valve seals. Oh well, just make sure nobody is standing behind the car when you crank it up.
