Engine oil

just bougth a 89 firebird 305.
wanted to know what kind of oil is best to use for this kind of car.and if anybody know any good places to take my car for any and all services and repairs in so cali.close to los angeles thanks alot!!!:hail:

you'll get a lot of differant answeres, but i and a lot of others prefer synthetic ,mobil 1 or amsoil. most people stay away from fram filters.

I heard if you have an older car, you shouldn't use synthetic because it will break all that old gunk up in your engine....but i don't know...i use castrol heavy duty sae 40.

Synthetic oil is best to run on most any engine, but if yours has a lot of build up inside, it could clean that away and open up leaks that were clogged by regular oil long ago. If that's the case, you're just uncovering problems that needed fixing anyway. You might also want to change your filter between changes. I try to use only ac delco filters, but they're getting harder to find.

As far as finding good service, most places suck. You just have to get lucky. Check your regional board. If you are okay with driving a bit there is a very good place off of Katella in Orange, you can find it at the top of the list of friendly businesses on the socal board.

what i want to know is what is the differences in 10w30, 10w40, 20w50, 40 weight and 30 wieght ect.......i never really understood all of that stuff.
