weird whining sound??

i have an 89 TBI camaro with a 5 speed. at about 1700 rpms or so i start getting a whining sound and it gets louder till about 2600 rpms (i dont hear it then, but that may be because of my exhaust. not sure) it makes this sound regardless of what gear im in, even in neutral...any ideas??

Where is it coming from? Was working on a car yesterday that had a whining noise like that, turned out to be the electric fuel pump. I couldn't believe it, I'd never heard a stock fuel pump that noisy before.

I have the same problem in my 89. My dad says it is the alternator. I listened to the one in my 91 and it doesn't do it. So I am gonna buy a new alternator and carry it and my toolbox with me!!

it sounds like its coming from the motor somewhere...someone said it could be the smog pump, or an alternator barring..my alternator is about a yr old remanufactured one..so not sure..but its driving me nuts!

Icould be the smog pump, but the smog pump is a vane type pump. There is really nothing in there to whine--maybe the bearing. Just my opinion guys.

iv got an idea

take your belt/belts off the engine and start it for a second if it still is doing it it isnt anything beong driven by the front half of the engine i did this and found out my alternater was going bad my car has a v belt set up do first i un hooked the water pump belt and that wasnt it so then i unhooked the alternater belt and bingo the noise went away and engine perd like a kitten.

Warning!!
DO NOT LET YOUR ENGINE RUN ANY LONGER THEN ID SAY A MINUITE CAUSE IT WILL EATHER OVER HEAT OR THE BATTERIE WILL GO DEAD DEPENDING ON WHAT BELT U HAVE UN HOOKED.

yeah

yes it wont hurt any thing at all just dont let it run any longer then 2 minuites
if the noise goes away then it is soemthign that is driven by the belt not the engine internaly. for example
water pump
alternater
air pump
power steering
fan clutch

Could it just be a loose belt?

Car: Only a daily driver, but comin home
Engine: I have one that runs ;)
Transmission: Caged hamster that runs really fast
Axle/Gears: They are round, I know that much
if it sounds like a supercharger whine then it is most defiantely your alternator, mine was like that, some guy came up and offered me money thinking my car was supercharged, but if it isnt like a supercharger then it is somethign else like you steering pump or fuel pump

With the engine running, Push the distributor sideways and see if the note changes. Took me a while to figure that one! Re-con dizzy from autozone Florida to the UK in three days!

If you look for the post Thirdgen Video Released, they have a vid of a blower sound. I'm not sure if its the second or first one, but I'll find out later today.
