SR 305 vs Ported LB9's
If i could get a set of LB9's with 1.94/1.5 valves, LT4 springs, ported and polished, hot tanked and all the rest of that magic with new seals, would they produce the same #'s as a SR 305 torquers?
I would say if you can rebuild the LB9 heads and do port polish work and cost less then th S/R's then you will be ahead of the game.
Sitting Bull and F-bird88(sp?sorry) are both big advocates to porting 305 heads for some big flow.
Five7kid has S/R's and can testify to those being good heads.
I would say price out both and .... go with the cheaper as both will give you excellent results and both ported and polished will give you very similar flow #'s

Vader is also porting a set of 416s. I think he's worked with both sets, which I have not, so he will be able to give a good accounting of the differences.
But if you do a good job on the 305 heads there is no reason it shouldn't be better than Vortecs. It might be a big job to improve SRs that much, but I just don't know.
Thus I can't give a completely informed opinion on this poll. Wait till Vader, F-Bird'88 and five7kid weigh in.

Ultimately when fully ported the S/R are going to make more
power. The port walls are thicker to start with so you can make a bigger better port when done.
It all comes down to Time and $$$ and what your goals are.
But plan on putting some extensive hand work into both.

The World 04205s seem to have fairly heavy castings that would lend themselves well to port enlargement. I've had the heads on my bench, but never ported them. I've ported quite a few stock heads, and even with the "lowly" '993 castings I've been able to exceed the 170cc World S/R Torquers' as-cast port volumes. It all depends on how much time you want to spend on the stock castings. If you really want to get volume on stock heads or you're running in a stock-class category requiring stock castings, cut through the area next to the push rod guides, and cut through the center divider wall between intake runners, and weld up the castings where you break through. You could easily make 190+ volumes that way.
If you're not into a lot of manual work or don't need stock heads, check out World Castings and other options. For the $500 you'll spend on those bare S/R Torquer castings, you might want to scour the bone yards for '96-up Vortec 305 (VIN 'M') heads. They have 60cc chambers and start at 171cc ports - pretty respectable.

well, its for a street car that will see minimal track time. Its really just some power for the street. Thats the reason i kept with the 305 for now. i thought the SR's had 180cc intake? OH well. There is a guy selling a set of ported 305 tpi heads for centerbolts near me and i might go check them out. it has LT4 springs and manley valves with all new other components.. and he wants around 400 for them.. maybe i could get that down a little.. we will see.

I apologize profoundly for my error. I am prepared to abdicate my position as Moderator, give up my membership, sell my ThirdGen, and drive a bicycle as punishment for my grievous oversight.
Yeah, right. I can barely remember where set down my coffee cup, let alone specifications on some Chinese castings to within 1/2% ...

alright, just one problem..... insurance. My car has been sitting and usualy my dad takes car of it because of this great state of Nj, but hasnt yet for either financial reasons, or cause he doesnt want me to start with the car. He kinda thinks its a dumb idea to even have this hobby in the first place. You have to understand that my dad, even though he is the original owner of the Z and loved it, is a closet r*cer... theres no 2 ways about it. Hes all about his neighbors civic si. hes like "there quick for a little car"... im like... and they look like donkey a$$. sorry for the little rant there... i just get pissed sometimes cause ive been home from college almost a month now and have yet to lay a fresh patch of rubber. I took her out around the block last night... and it felt so good to do that. ok im done now hehehe thanks for the heads up guys. I deff gunna need a nice set of heads for the cam. i hope to hit low 14's with this. Ill keep everyone up to date as parts come in!.
