Got the car started! But....
...it's as if the engine is only running on about 3 cylinders. It took a lot of cranking before it caught, and only once did I get it to idle for all of 4 seconds before it died. On a couple of occasions the carb backfired also. The other thing is, when I pulled on my temporary throttle cable, the engine speed did not increase.
I have heard that these are the symptoms of installing the distributor 180 degrees out...is that right? Are there any other possibilities I could try?

Your timing could also be off. Have someone watch with a timing light while you are cranking it to start to get an idea of where the timing is. I would say make sure all your wires are on in the right place also. Was it backfiring out of the intake or exhaust?

Si,
Was teh car an import after initial sale or built for delivery to the UK? You may be able to tell by the VECI label under the hood or GVWR label in the lft door jamb.
I'll try to find the correct vacuum routing diagram based on your findings.
