High idle, choke light on, and ALT. over charging.
ok, about 2 months ago i had to buy a new altinator, i had 2 options and i wasn't sure wich one was on mine, so i just got the "big one" and since then ive been fine.. now all the sudden my choke light comes on, im idling around 1,000 rpms. and down the highway i have to have the blower fan on high, and/or radio turned up and if im going really fast i have to turn the lights on too to keep the voltage out of the red zone. why now? seems to me somthin that should be getting juice, isn't..
when i got home today, i investigated the choke on my carb.. and it seems to be sticking, i'd pull it wide open like it should be when the engine is hot. and it bounced right back.. it is cooler outside and i have a 160 deg. Thermostat. could it be cause its not getting hot enough?
thanx for any help.. sorry this is so long.

I'd have to say it sounds like the regulator in the alternator's gone out. It's odd that it went out after only 2 months, but it's certainly not unheard of. If you have the receipt and if it's still under warrenty I'd just take it back in and get a replacement.
As for the choke, I'll bet that the overvoltage fried the choke heater coil and because of that, the bimetallic spring isn't getting warm enough to close the choke. Disconnect the wire going to the choke coil and use a ohmmeter to see if you get continuity between the choke coil terminal and ground. If not, then it's fried and needs to be replaced.
Good luck!
