Check Engine Light

Hi, the other day, my check engine light came on while I was driving. So everytime I go to drive my car, it stays on. I tried to use my diagnostic feature under my dash, but nothing works. I put a jumper wire to the A & B terminals to see if any codes will flash but the light just stays on. It won't flash at all. Whats the problem? Im guessing something is wrong with the diagnostic system or something because it aint working at all. Please help.

Have you tried to reset the computer and see if it reappears right away? Unplug the battery for a minute should more than do the trick.

when you say you are jumping terminals a and b, when are you doing this? the ignition needs to be off when you jumper them and then you need to turn the key and the fan should turn on then it should start flashing stored codes starting with 12.

I tried to reset it by unpluging the battery and that little plug that goes to the battery for the resetting of the codes, but didnt work. And I did put the jumper in and then turned the ignition on and the light just stays on. Nothing flashes. Im thinking something is wrong with my diagnostic system or something. Please help.

What does the SES light do as soon as you turn on the ignition? Watch it closely for a flash.

What is the SES light? The CHECK ENGINE LIGHT? If so, it just comes on when I turn the ignition on or when I turn the car on. It doesn't flash at all.

THe SES is Service Engine Soon. Another one you may run into is MIL, Malfunction Indicator Light/Lamp.

It should be on with the ignition on, engine off. Are you sure you are jumping the correct terminals at the ALDL?

That MIL flash on power-up only lasts about 80mS, so you have to be watching closely. It's nowhere near as long as a regular code flash rate. If it isn't happening, you may have an ECM problem. Check the power and grounds to the ECM, and verify that all connectors are secure and the PROM is inserted correctly.

Just for clarity:
