Spark Plug electrode?

Ive been here for some time and have read some cool stuff, but i have never heard of this cutting back the electrode for more power, esp for someone who has a H.O. coil... is this true? I figured it cant be that good cause then people would put that down as a free mod or something. I never hear anyone talk about it. Is it really just a waste of time and bustin knuckles or worth doing it. I guess kinda like the TB bypass... its good that you do it, but wont get you anywhere. Just figured if i could get a bigger spark with bigger gap and what not that it would have a better burn then stock.. oh well.. any info would be great.. thanks.

Al,

The theory is that more of the fuel charge can be exposed to the ignition source if the side electrod is cut back. This is presumed to allow the flame front to travel directly away from the plug instead of around it first.

One could also theorize that the spark could be blown out more easily that way, so a high energy ignition would be essential. It would be interesting to read dyno results on that mod. CHP has a spark plug article this month, but doesn't go into that kind of detail. I did see that the writer coined my favorite terminology of "designer plugs" in reference to the Bosch +4. At least someone's been paying attention.

Waste of time and effort, plus the plugs won't last as long. It's hard to beat good old A/C plugs gapped correctly to your ignition(stock or otherwise). If it did any good, everyone would be doing it. I'm sure their is a specific application where cutting the plug back will help, but not in a mild small block. The Bosch +4 will give me 4 sparks, giving me 4 times the power--right?

Let's clarify....

To the AVERAGE person, the spark plug mod is probably not worth it. To the guy who try to wring every last tenth out of his car before anything else, it might be a worthwhile mod.

Like indexing spark plugs......

It's been shown to improve power to a degree...getting the electrode facing the perfect way in the chamber....

There are tons of little tricks that done seperately might not do squat, but with patience, and added together can make a difference. Of course this usually applies to someone racing ALL The time, to the point where they have CONSISTENT 60ft times and ET's and have pretty much tuned the heck out of the current combo.

Just my 2 euros...
