Many mid-80's v6's came with a 3.42/open/drum ratio.
Between 1983 and 1984, you could find a manual T/a with a 3.73/posi/disc rear. If you find the '83, that does NOT use metric fittings... metric started in '84, so you'd have to do alot of converting! The '84 trans am's engine code was "G".
There was also a 1984 HO Camaro (Badge on back left bumper says "Camaro 5.0L HO"). This had a 3.73/open/drum rear.
Pop the axle cover and make sure the gears are intact (and count teeth to double check the ratio) when you find one!

I just got a 3.73 open rear out of a 4 cyl firebird..thats another option. Also, some year 6 cyl manuals came with 3.73's.
Make sure it turns freely, no clunks, and instead of counting the teeth the ring gear has, the ring gear has the amount of teeth on the pinion and ring stamped on it. It'll say 11:41, or 12:42....something like that. Makes it easier.
