Is my engine being treated bad with the type of oil being put in it?
Hey guys,
My Camaro (3.1 V6) has 73k miles on it, and I just got the idea that the oil being put in it by the mechanic is not as good as can be. The current oil in it now is ProLine (Pep Boys) 10-W40. He writes the type of oil on a little slip which gets stickered on my radiator bar. But the problem is, will this oil mess up my car eventually? I know that from now on I will be changing my own oil with castrol syntec 5W-30 (as specified in the owners manual), but should I just ride out the oil for another 1500 miles like scheduled? Or shall I change it right away when she gets home from being repainted. I know this is weird but it just dawned on me that this may be a problem, thank you for your help.

There is no doubt that synthetic is a better lubricant. But as long as you have been changing oil at no more than 3,000 mile or 3 month intervals, you're not "neglecting" your manintenance. Wait until your next scheduled change, then switch - unless you're having problems with the oil that's now in the sump.

Your "mechanic" probably has good reason for using this weight oil in your engine besides being able to buy it in bulk cheap.
Also Syntec is crap! Ive got a couple people who use it and have always used it. I'm not impressed with all the build up inside of thier engines compared to a M1 users, like myself.
