I was reading about a guy wanting to do a trans maount and being warned when taking off the trans mount not to let the engine tip and destroy the dist cap. Well when I changed my trans, and the trans xmember was removed the engine di not tip at all. In fact the friend that was helping me was pissed and mystified why the engine wouldn't tip so that we could get to the upper bolts a little better. Does this mean my engine mounts are the best in the world or something else?

 

I would have to go with very stiff engine mounts although i am confused... and your sure there was nothing under the tranny like a jack or piece of wood?

when you took the x menber out did you take off the bolt tat actually bolts to the tranny mount itself? thats all i can think of

 

The entire xmember came off not just the ones that secures the mount. We even pulled on the tail of the trans to try and get it to move more. There was nothing under the trans to limit its motion.

 

The torque arm, and the exhaust, will both help to hold the trans up. In fact, depending on how you had the rear of the car supported, it's possible that the torque arm was actually lifting the trans from its rest position (i.e. trying to break the mount).

It is normal.

 

The engine will tip back unless something is holding it, unless it has solid mounts, was the exhaust system hooked up? That can keep the engine from tipping, maybe the engine was already so close to the firewall that the distributor hit and you didn't notice it.

 

The Tq arm was lyinhg on the floor so that wasnt it and the driveshaft was on the floor too. Never thought of the exhaust. Though they ehaust is only held up at 2 places, the bolts on the headers and the brackets for the muffler.
