tach problem

installing a sport comp tach on my 89 IROC and i'm having trouble connecting the green wire to the coil... i've tried both positive & negative sides white wires and still nothing reading on the tach... got the other 3 wires hooked up no prob. and 1 more thing... can you only adjust the needle for the shift lite when the green wire is connected?

help greatly appreciated
