distributor, ignition coil, or .... don't know

ok. this is the situation, my car isn't starting, It has a new cap a new rotor and new spark plug wires and what not.

ok I try starting ... nothing.

I pull a spark plug and keep the wire on it and ground it and try to start the engine. no spark.

ok so I hooked up the spark plug directly to the ignition coil.
It sparks when the car first starts cranking and then sometimes when I stop cranking.

I thought the ignition coil would spark 8 times every time around?

What am I doing wrong? anyone? lol I have an apointment to have the cars mufflers put on tomorrow gotta get it started somehow any help is appreciated.

check the wires plugging into the cap, the battery wire more specifially. if its lose/broke, that could cause that (the one right by the plug for the tach)

make sure those 2 plugs are plugged in SECURELY. when i first bought my car, i nailed it through an intersection, and the plug with the 2 wires came out just a bit and the car died. after looking over the car for about 20 mintues we finally noticed it. pushed it down, and it fired right up. good luck.

hmmmm

I think ... that might be it. Does the ignition coil need to be grounded?
