383 Crate engine.......

Ok I dont really understand this 383 thing. Is it really its OWN engine or is it just a bored out 350? And how many versions are there of it?

A 383 originally was a 350 block bored 0.030 over with a turned-down 400 crankshaft, 350 pistons and 400 rods. This combination was very popular so manufacturers started making dedicated 383 cranks which were essentially a 400 rod sized for a 350 journal, and pistons with a higher wrist pin which can be used with the longer 350 rod rod rather than the short 400 rod.

Actually, there are two general classes of '383's'. The first is the bored and stroked 350. Then, there's also the understroked 400. Depends on what you want to do. torque vs horsepower, different power bands, different rev limits, etc.

Isn't a destroked 400 a 377?

I think Apeiron is right, a stroked 350 gets you to 383 not a destroked 400 !!

Destroked 400 is a 377. A 350 bored .030 over, with 5.7 rods and special 383 pistons makes a 383. They are totally different than 350 pistons because the wristpin is higher. You can also make a 383 with 6.0 rods, but may cost more in the long run.

350 4 bolt main, Speed-O-Motive 383 stroker kit, re-sized rods ground for clearance,Hypereutectic pistons,9.8:1 compression,HPC Coated RPM intake, Speed Demon 750 cfm carb,World Products Sportsman II heads,2.02/1.60 valves, K-Motion springs, Comp Cam 1.6 roller rockers, Lunati adv.292/230@.050 with .512 lift,Crane pushrods,Proform HEI and MSD6A box,HPC coated 1 5/8 headers, 2.5" exhaust with 40 series mufflers,TH350 with B&M 3000 stall, Powertrax NoSlip Locker, 4.11 gears.
