weird fuel gauge problem..

ok my fuel gauge hasnt been workin right for a few months now.. i've been puttin it off but im gettin tired of runnin outa gas so i guess its time to do somethin about it.. the guage is always on empty except when it runs out of gas then it likes to go all the way over to full.. when driving the car with any amount of gas the needle is always on empty unless you hit the brakes in which case it will go up for a brief second then go back to empty.. so anyway what do you guys make of this? im thinking bad sending unit?

I'd do a search and read about how everyone else's guages are messing up too.

My guage stays stuck at full until I only have 1/4 tank left. Then the guage seems to be accurate.

I was told its probably the sending unit and I think that is in the tank. My guage works well enuf so I can get by with it. It doesn't seem worth pulling the tank to fix it.

Most of the posts I read described variations of how my guage is acting up. Your guage seems to be reading the opposite of other messed up guages.
