need help with kickdown...
well actually, it isn't installed... my car is an 83 t/a... ever since i've had the car (less than a yr) the kickdown was never put to use, i'm thinking of reinstalling it... how do i go about it? the cable with the black plastic assembly is there, it's just not hooked up to anything right now... first, how do i check if it's still connected to the tranny? what sort of tension should i feel when i pull on the cable? should there be a click or something? is the whole thing mechanical? all i know is that it should downshift a gear when the cable is pulled...is that all there is to it? thanks...

just hook it up to the tranny and to the bracket up by the carb

get under the car and look!
what sort of tension should i feel when i pull on the cable?
it has set positions buy the brackets i believe
just get under your hood and car and look! you'll figure it out. all you need is a brain and a couple tools

The TV cable goes into the transmission on the passenger side, about even with the 2nd or 3rd pan bolt from the front. It's tight as hell up there, but you should at least be able to see if the cable is going into the trans or if there is just a plug in the hole. The only way to be certain about its connection is to drop the pan and look. Chances are it's probably hooked up. Hookup on the carb should be a snap. Literally. Snap it into the bracket, then the cable snaps onto a ball on the throttle linkage. If you look at the end of the cable, you'll see what I mean. You pull it past the ball, then slide it back on like hanging a slotted picture frame on the head of a nail. It'll snap into place.

greetings jim...
that's the problem, i changed to a carb setup, none of the original linkages are there, except for the cable, i plan on fabricating my own linkages and stuff, so i want to check if the cable still works, i mean if i'm to go through all the trouble to hook it all up only to realize the whole thing ain't working, wtf right?
the cable's there, there's a certain limit when i pull on it so i guess it's hooked up to something, though i don't feel any "steps" when i pull... should it feel like it's engaging or something?
...as far as i know when the cable is pulled to a certain extent via throttle linkage the tranny downshifts, am i correct? i'll try to hook it up temporarily to see if it downshifts, since i will only be testing it can i have the tranny downshift at any rpm? (for testing purposes only)or does it require a certain rpm? thanx...i'll still be looking for that brain MAMASAID...

From my experience, you can't tell if the cable engages or not by pulling on it. You shouldn't feel any clicks and the travel should be limited. The cable should also return by itself. Just hook the cable up to the throttle linkage and adjust it. The adjustment procedure is here somewhere, probably in the tech section.
The TV cable doesn't only tell the tranny to downshift but also controls the general shift feel. I once accidentally knocked the TV cable adjustment off, and the tranny went crazy. I was getting the sloppiest most ill timed shifts imaginable. Generally, the tighter the TV cable, the harder and later the shift. Setting the TV cable tighter than it should be will NOT give better performance. You may get harder shifts but the tranny will sort of hang up before it shifts.
That said, figure out some way of hooking the TV cbale up to your carb and discover what you've been missing.
