Do I have an oil cooler?
Just that, do I have an oil cooler? My car is an '89 IROC-Z 350 L98. I noticed two small metal lines going in the direction of the oil filter, but I can't see if they connect or not, and I don't know if they are coming from the radiator. Thanks. -89IRO

those r the tranny cooler lines. the oil cooler lines run from the oil filter housing to the heater and radiator i think or something like that. those are just regular heater hose.

tranny cooler lines would be on the pass side of the engine compartment, oil cooler lines on the drivers side, as far as i know the stock "oil" coolers on these cars actually flow coolant through them which is suppose to help cool the oil off through osmosis...

hell i believe it works. on my fresh, clearance checked 355, the oil pressure when hot 220*, goes down to 20 @ idle. on my 120K 350, with KC1 cooler, the oil pressure @ 220* stays @ 35-40 PSI at idle.

What oil cooler? There is a transmission oil cooler in the right radiator tank. There is also a power steering oil cooler under the lower radiator support. Engine oil cooler? If you do, your filter adapter base will have coolant lines routed to it, just like Sinthetik said it would (he knows). Of course, if someone installed an aftermarket air/oil cooler, you're one lucky dude.
I would love to see if those two metal lines connect to the filter area, but I already said, when changing my oil last, I couldn't see if they connect. Like I said, my car is the L98, and I know of two small metal lines going under the car in the direction of the filter. So based on those two factors, is there a good possibility of me having the cooler? I wish it could be that easy. Or maybe I just wasn't looking in the right spot?

if you changed your own oil, the damn oil cooler cannot be missed. if you saw the bypass adapter (an aluminum thing that the filter screws onto) you don't have a cooler. the cooler is all metal where the filter screws onto and flat. it has two short pieces of rubber (about 4" in length) connecting it to the (5/8" or 3/4"?) metal hoses. these metal lines are black in color or rust colored :sillylol:. you can't miss it.
i hope u have one. best of luck.
on another note, just cause it's an IROC doesn't mean it will have the KC1 cooler. my l98 89' IROC did not have it
. my l98 88' IROC did though

. Q: Does my car have an engine oil cooler?
A: All cars with the 350 ci (L98), 1LE, or B4C option got an oil cooler.
--That was taken off the tech. page (not the message board.) So I just figured I'd go by it. When I changed my oil, it was pretty dark so I couldn't see anything. I didn't feel like crawling out to get a flash light I guess. So you're saying I can't miss the two metal lines, right? Now do I have to have the filter off to see this, or can I go crawl under there right now and take a look? I don't want to wait 3 more months before I can check it out. -89IRO

Oh, a little off topic, but does anybody know what I can use to cap the two throttle body holes when I bypass the TB? I just want to cap them to keep dirt out. And where can I get caps? I am going to look really hard next time I change my oil to see if I have a damn oil cooler. What do you all think about what that tech article said on my last post? Thanks. -89IRO

that tech article is wrong. as in my case. to cap the throttlebody holes use some large 3/8" vacuum caps. they worked on my lt1. should be the same for a tpi.

yeah that's the family. though one is now departed into the junkyard in the sky. the 89'(maroon one) now rests. it died of cancer.

The RPO for the oil cooler is KC4.

Does any one know where the "Oil cooler" intersects the coolant at? I have a stock "oil cooler" on the 350 that I bought to replace my 305 with does not have one. I was just wondering how I can put it in. Pictures would be nice. Thanks

There are two hard lines(steel) that connect to the small rubber lines directly off the filter mount. These run in front of the oilpan below the crank pulley. One of them then goes into another long rubber heater hose into the heater core. The other goes into a L shaped heater hose which connects to the heater valve assembly. I just took mine off to free up some space when cleaning up the engine bay. I am now running synthetic oil to make up for any loss of cooling I might have caused by removing it.
